International Women’s Day, aka The Day of Honouring Divine Feminine
What an incredible time to be a self-identifying woman! I am proud to be given an opportunity in this lifetime to experience my life as a woman. While this day is quite dualistic-ly gendered and can feel exclusive to those who do not find oneself as comfortable with femininity, I will share what my experience of embracing an inclusive Divine Feminine Energy is like.
While the history of women-kind has, and still is, a dark past, we are resilient and strong. Depicted in Ancient iconography as fertility Goddesses, women are creators of life, we have the capacity to push bundles of the greatest masterpiece through our Divine Feminine gifts is an honour. While this masterpiece genetically created between two individuals is not priceless, in fact quite an expensive commitment, motherhood is only one of the Divine Feminine Powers that are honoured on this day.
We are also warriors, leaders, sexual and sensual beings. Yet is it not strange that the intense obsession to control women's bodies in patriarchal societies has been for thousands of years? I have come to believe this repressive system terrified of the power women hold. And when harnessed, what could happen? I mean, for one, we can do everything a man can do while bleeding. Badass women like Joan of Arc leading thousands of men, the Suffragettes, Indigenous matriarchs and visionaries who are honoured and respected. Let's use this day to remind ourselves of this power but, as my therapist would say, not power over but power together.
It is inevitable the one aspect therapists bring into sessions are themselves. In my sessions, with all gendered sex therapy clients, I do invite the Divine Feminine perspective. I let into the room an exposition of how to harness our feminine power, our sensuality, our emotional and non-bullshit parts and let them have a voice. Too often I see the ‘do-er masculine energy’ which says “I want to get rid of my problems”. It’s true, and I am grateful for this energy to be motivated to help as I too am using this energy to work with my clients healing process. That being said, I also help direct clients to slow down and listen to our parts with compassion and calmness with the feminine energy. These parts often sound like “Let’s witness each other. It’s okay to trust me”. For me, I experience these parts as soothing as it reminds my nervous system of the caregivers who offered me unconditional love.
Yes, this day is quite dichotomous, however I challenge you readers to witness yourselves as any gendered identification person and see where you might find a Divine Feminine part.
